Resumen

With over 400 superb illustrations, this global survey explores all aspects of amulets, not only their creation and symbolism, but the people and objects they protect. Malign spirits have always been feared, but modern dangers – car crashes and even mobile phones – have invoked an abiding faith in the magical protection that amulets offer.

They come in an astonishing variety of guises, from stones to animal tails, from teeth to bells. Worn as necklaces, sewn to clothing, painted on buildings or hung up in vehicles, they guard children, warriors, travellers and purses, livestock, crops and houses.

Sheila Paine is a world expert on tribal societies and textiles.
